Tax Audit Defense
You should never undertake your own defense of a tax inquiry from any fiscal authority, whether it be federal, state or local. The tax or fiscal area is one of incredible volume when it comes to statutes and especially when it comes to regulations. There are many “terms of art” which will be unfamiliar to the layman. Accidental use of one of these triggering phrases may result in an audit involving significant time and money.

The Tax Auditor, to be blunt, is looking for revenue. He or she is not looking for the truth. We have had to rescue many clients who thought the Auditor, like Diogenes with his lamp, was simply looking for an honest man. These people typically divulge reams of paper in a hopeless attempt to satisfy the Auditor. These reams of paper are then assembled by the Auditor in a way that results in an increase of revenue for the fiscal authority.

The untrained eye can not sort for relevance or weight the myriad of documents which an Auditor might request. Mr. Foltz has over 25 years experience in tax audit defense at the local, state and federal levels.
